Snoring/Sleep Apnea

Sleep should be a restful time for the body to rejuvenate. For many this is a stressful time on the body due to improper airflow. Snoring is a sound that indicates a disturbance in the airway. Obstructive Sleep Apnea is a condition where the airway is disrupted or completely closed long enough to significantly decrease oxygen levels. This will eventually trigger the brain to wake up. These events will cause a spike in adrenalin, increased heart rate, blood pressure and breathing. Once sleep is resumed the cycle repeats. These episodes recurring through-out the night will have serious consequences on the individual’s health and life expectancy. OSA increases risk of heart attack and stroke

  Diagnosis and treatment

When left untreated, OSA can be life threatening. Sleep apnea increases the risk for heart attacks and strokes. Because of the severity of the disorder, all patients must be evaluated with a sleep study diagnosed by a board certified physician.  Lab studies and home studies can be used to acquire this information. Our office has invested in a home sleep study system and airway evaluation instruments to aid in this process.

For the patient that has been diagnosed with sleep apnea and either refuses or is intolerant to CPAP use we can provide an alternative treatment.  The dental field has collaborated with the medical field to provide custom made oral appliances that reposition the jaw to prevent the airway from closing. This will keep airflow possible providing a comfortable, portable solution to apnea and snoring for most patients.
